Opt Out

“Do not confuse motion and progress. A rocking horse keeps moving but does not make any progress.” – Alfred A. Montapert

It seemed like a pre-Memorial weekend thing to do. Jeanine and I tried Costco last Saturday. I’ve never been a “member” and Jeanine’s card had an expiration date from 1997. Our friends rave about the place so we decided to give it another shot. The place is nutty. Is it this crowded every Saturday?

We were on a mission for one item: a graduation gift for Jeanine’s brother. Since it was something specific and we didn’t really intend on browsing, I abandoned the cart within 2 minutes and suggested that we maneuver through the store without it. Jeanine said, “But you’ll lose our cart!” and I immediately responded, “Do you really think we’re going to buy something in all this craziness?”

The checkout lines were enormous and I couldn’t imagine any savings worth the effort to deal with this place. One friend said that you have to wear blinders and just make a beeline for the grocery section in the back corner. They buy all their meat and poultry in bulk – frozen, of course. Our friends swear by the savings.

Is this how America spends their weekends? Jeanine and I stayed for less than 10 minutes. It took longer than that to get out of the parking lot. I’m more of a Smart & Final kind of gal. Have you heard of Smart & Final? It’s the mini warehouse. You can buy all the necessities in bulk: paper products, detergent, bottled water, cleaning supplies, even boxed grocery items like cereal.

You’re in and you’re out. No crazy lines. No crowded isles. Nobody has convinced me of the value of Costco. But have fun and enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend. I’m sure Costco has lawn chairs on sale if you need some.
