Affordable Housing
“Human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” - Williams JamesAs the cost of housing continues to rise, I must admit that sometimes I fantasize about cashing out and downsizing. Unfortunately, I am in the proverbial acquisition stage of life. Earn more… spend more.
I spend my disposal dollars on income generating assets, but my partner and I still have a big nut to carry every month with the mortgage on our primary residence and the expenses that go along with it. We live in a beautiful home but nevertheless, sometimes I read about people like Jay Shafer and think that there is something to be said about the simple life.
“Since 1997, Jay Shafer has been living in houses smaller than some people's bathrooms. His hand built house is called Tumbleweed. His decision to inhabit just 100 square feet arose from some concerns he had about the impact a larger house would have on the environment, and because he just did not want to maintain a lot of unused or unusable space. This dwelling has met all of his domestic needs without demanding much in return. The simple, slower lifestyle his homes have afforded is a luxury for which he is supremely grateful.”
